Benfica issues official statement regarding talks between Joao Neves and Man Utd

Benfica has recently released a statement refuting claims of discussions with Manchester United regarding the potential transfer of Joao Neves. The 19-year-old midfielder has become a key player for the Portuguese club, who currently hold the second position in the Primeira Liga, trailing just one point behind Sporting Lisbon. Neves has showcased his talent in the defensive midfield position, making 29 appearances across all competitions. His contract with Benfica extends until the summer of 2028 and includes a buy-out clause valued at £103 million. Reports emerged earlier this week suggesting that United would initiate talks with Benfica to secure Neves' services. Despite the possibility of a substantial fee, it is believed that the Red Devils are prepared to commence negotiations. However, Benfica has dismissed these reports and denied any discussions with United. In an official statement, the club stated, "Sport Lisboa e Benfica denies the existence of any right of preference over its player João Neves. Under no circumstances did Sport Lisboa e Benfica enter into talks with Manchester United or any other club about this player from their formation – nor does it intend to do so – so any information that points in another direction is false." This statement aligns with the stance of manager Roger Schimdt, who previously emphasized that none of his players have expressed a desire to leave as they aim to defend their title from last season.
